Then I got a call from Bob Ezrin, the producer, and he asked me if I would do an album with Lou Reed. I went from playing seven days a week with Mayall to one day a month with Beck. [long pause, laughs.] Everything's electronic. To cut out the over-ring on the bass drums, I have them lined with half- inch thick foam rubber . [laughs] But in those days it was a bomb. I did not use steroids! Actually Jonathan Cain tried to go down and go in and see him in San Francisco and they wouldnt let him in the building! And then it felt terrible._ [laughs]_. And those lyrics are a big part of it. And then, boom, Journey starts, and I was like, Oh, my God. I just couldnt believe it. Using your fingers makes em better. . I did four months with Jeff, but he only liked to work about one day a month, which was not enough for me. Its extremely gratifying to have people come up and say Open Arms was my prom song, and to this day, my husband and I still listen to it. Or when guysll come up and say, Yknow, I wasnt into youse guys, but if I took a chick to your concert you know what Im sayin? I get the whole spectrum. You were never cool. I think back in the day, there was a decision, by a couple of key editors, to never give us our just desserts. RM: You also did the movie 200 Motels with Ringo and Keith Moon. To the average person, they just don t like drum solos. Please prove that you're human. I wasnt really into jamming too much. It's something I was thinking about, but it is to the point where it sounds like everybody's done it all with what's there. Only certain people understand the technique parts. So that was a big part of the pressure? So fine-I couldn't have asked for a better opportunity. But I didnt. Now, I was grateful for everything that had happened. He has worked with John Mayall, Frank Zappa, Jeff Beck, Journey, Jefferson Starship, Nils Lofgren, Eric Burdon, Shuggie Otis, Ian Hunter, Lou Reed, David B read more. Remember, it took two solo albums from Neal before I did my first. I find studio work less fulfilling, actually. Waka/ Jawaka was also a jazz album. I'd most likely end up breaking the pickups if I played them, because I don't like to play lightly. In my mind, he cracked the stone when he went out and did our stuff without us. They would have kept going, I know that. And after we compiled enough material to go in and cut our first record Infinity, we all listened to it and went, Wow, theres something here. And the label was freakin out, they were lovin it. And at that point were all thinking, Oh, wow. Sopranos! Its like, What the fuck? It was unbelievably cool. I'd like to sit at home and work on that sort of stuff. I've decided in my ownhead what sells records and what doesn't. But at the same time, the difference between a voice and fingers, or hands, is neurotic at best. We went back, and we started writing Raised on Radio. Right on! So that was like a nod to Journey from my solo side. You dont seem to understand how much I wanted to sing in that band. If you watch the [Behind the Music] documentary on VH1its pretty much one-sided, with Perry, the way they edited that thing, but there was a couple funny things that went down in that interview. She would be on one side of the stage with the orchestra, and I would be on the other, so there was a gap between us. I was writing for the people who might want to listen to it. For a while, I was doing too many studio gigs, and I couldn't wait to get on the road. When that audience wanted an encore, and they would not let you leave, it was just so gratifying. Ross Valory had played with Steve Miller and people like that, I didnt have that. I really had to let it all go. Dunbar was asked by Kantner to leave in 1982, with Donny Baldwin taking his place in September. _[laughs] _Having people love you every night is a beautiful way to run away from things. You can be working 10, 12, 14 hours every day. **Whats the beef about, specifically? Did they give you any advice? **Did you just realize at some point that you needed a frontman? Did you feel betrayed, by the fact that theyd been looking at other vocalists? Have you followed whats gone on since then, at all? RM: Of all the albums you've played on, which ones stand out in your mind? I've been with them for about four years now. But that can make you perspire too much and you can get cramps from the lack of salt. Grand Wazoo was charts. When a drummer gets calluses on his hands, they no longer chafe and they no longer blister, and thats fantastic. AD: Ludwig. RM: I noticed you and Craig looking at each other a lot. Its amazing. It wasnt easy to walk out, but I had to do it. I imagine it was a really good way to run away from things, for a while. I mean, I heard him the first time with David Bowie. AD: I started playing violin when I was nine. And then the second song we wrote, I was downstairs in Gregg Rolies house, where I was living, in Mill Valley, and Perry was over, and we were sittin down in the beanbags in the music room, and he started singin me these melodies that he had, for Lights. And I just started putting the stumble to it, felt like it was gonna be a stumble, and tried to give it some Hendrix-y type chords, to make it sound cool, and then I added a bridge to that, for a guitar solo, and that one was done, in about ten minutes. Liverpool drummer Aynsley Dunbar had been working with Merseybeat hitmakers The Mojos (their "Everything's Alright" reached no.9 in 1964) in their later incarnation as "Stu James & The Mojos," and recorded two singles with them before the group disbanded in 1966. . Its what I do. AD: I've always liked Max Roach. And as long as, at the end of the night, I heard what they felt about it, then I was good to go. RM: Didn't you use Ludwigs with the Mothers? What happened was wed put out our first record, Journey, and I think we sold a little over 100,000 records. You must put that in there, the preface, because its important. Then I was playing lead lines on the violin. Permission was received January, 2001. And he picks Journey. It's fun while you're there, especially if you're building something you want to build-like a song that you will be performing on stage. I look at people like Jeff Beck who are in their 60s and still kicking ass, with more fire than they had when they were kids. Even now, I need a teacher to drive me so I practice and advance more. I work hard the first day, then take one day off; then sort of a lighter workout on the middle day, with a day off; and then tough on the third day, with two days off afterward. Sykes, is one of the co-writers of nine track's from the albums, but was later on, along with drummer Aynsley Dunbar and bassist Neil Murray, kicked out of the band. AD: It's the difference that's required by the song. I met him when Journey was opening up for Jeff Beck, before Steve was in the band. I was also looking after Jeff as far as that was concerned. It worries the hell out of everybody else because I'm changing things all over the place and it almost sounds like a drum solo. RM: You did a lot of different styles of music during those three years. And it took a few more months, until October, and then I was ready, and found the right doctor for me. Its just that he thinks every time we talk about him, we talk crap about him, and its really not true. I used to play with a group called the Merseysippi Jazz Band. Which made me, inevitably, want to put it back together, without Steve. Everybody went against me on that issue. I think the last show, was at the end of January, 87. The guy could sing amazingly well. So my drum solo lasted about 20 minutes. But they went on to make a lot of money. And to a degree I guess we are. There was several medical, non-surgical choices, and I tried all of those. But I needed to go home. When I was with Zappa, I wanted to learn to play vibes, and I wanted to be able to read faster, so I took some les- sons from Mitchell Peters, who is with the L.A. Philharmonic. _[laughs] _I cant believe that this is news. But some little old woman could have walked in. Hearing the music rather than counting it is always the best way. I mean, back roads, where theres no cars, where theres nothing but coyotes. I imagine the band had become a huge business, given all the records youd sold. I still am, somewhat. That's how I look at rock and roll drums, or drumming as a whole, actually. **You went on to make a string of hit records with Steve. For about six months, I worked with just a snare drum. I had not opened that up in over ten years. I'll keep going and see if I can get anything else out of it." I didn't know who the hell John Mayall was, so I asked my wife, and she said she thought he was a. country/western singer. I also played with Jimi Hendrix. I got a panic in me. Call it the J-Boys. [laughs] She looked up, her eyes got like saucers. Neal and I wrote our first song that night in the hotel room, after the show. Do you think that dynamic was set up from the beginning? And I just couldnt do it anymore. But I recently heard another famous jazz drummer, and I got very bored. I couldn't leave the people in my band just to do some wandering around the country, although it would have led to the Led Zeppelin gig, which was offered to me as well. You made one more record together. but you were never a critics band. I came off stage feeling perfectly happy and wonderful, whereas I used to come off stage being on the very edge. Because they said we all sounded alike. We dont get along, but I love his playing. Im serious. But it was just great. Way after. Then I went out and got a bass drum and hi-hat and started playing with that. Nowadays I get complaints about long drum solos, but in those days they wanted me to keep on going so they could go over to the bar and have a drink. When I'm playing rock and roll with the Starship, if I sat there filling in all over the place, it would sound messy. AD: I tune them. I played with him for nearly three years and had a great time. Did you feel like you were the new guy, still, after all that? He is popular for being a Drummer. You think? Hes not just a Steve Perry emulator. And the bigger drum doesn't give you any more sound on stage. And so I think Ill play, probably until the day I die. We were ready to go and rehearse and do the first video, and I was on a ten-day break before we started rehearsals. Everybody thinks singers are prima donnas. As soon as you get stuck into counting, you forget what is happening out front. I still never wanted Journey to go away, because it was something that I was there from the beginning and started. He was!. When I did drink, it was in excess. I remember that tour, the Raised on Radio tour. So I thought, Well, maybe Im not supposed to be there.. I don't want to do it like some of the clinics I've seen where the guy will come out and say, . And Tony Newman - a wild man! They're bringing out electronic drum kits now, that you can play on stage. After you've been around a while, you understand that you can't play everything you've ever wanted to play. He could have picked Tony Bennettthe greatest voice! Yeah. And I dont think Ill be able to come back to it if you break it. In 1974 after having recorded twelve albums in two years Aynsley was acclaimed by the music industry as the world's leading session musician. So at the end of a night, you feel great. I said, Im gonna get it done. Now, I'm using two 20" bass drums, 10", 12" and 14" power toms on top of the kit, 16" and 18" floor toms, and an 8 x 14 wood-shell snare drum, which is really a good,.sounding drum. But that was his open door, to go do it, and that was sort of the beginning of the demise. I would read in down beat that so and so's new record was out, I'd go to the shop and never see it. I like doing all of that. But it just hasnt happened. I know I'm going to do an album sometime. I did not like it, one bit. Is it just that people can relate to the sentiment in that song? It was self-indulgent music. I feel lost when Im not doing it. And Id always wanted to do a record with him, because I just loved his musicalityI loved the fact that he played like a wicked guitar player, and was always curious what Id sound like playing with him. The iconic singer appeared onstage with his former bandmates as they each gave speeches, but did not perform with the group later in the event. And theyve really liked it. Then one day a few years later it would finally turn up. Yeah. He was in another band, at that point, and apparently they were getting ready to get signed, and his bass player was in an awful car crash and died. I was confounded by that. If you were to play maybe 8th notes at that point, people could hear it and under- stand it. One time, I went therethere used to be a coffee shop right in front of it, and I was having coffee, watching people. I was using alcohol for many, many years, to numb myself. You can only repeat the same structure over and over so many times before it gets monotonous. We were just playing dance music, but because I had been practicing for a few years, I was able to play along with all of the people who were my heroes. And the show was gonna air on Sunday, finally, my publisher got back to me saying well, they need to know, and I said, If theyll tell me how its used, then Ill be glad to let go of my own equal approval. So I had to swear to not tell nobody, which I did, and they told me how the show ends. And so we were basically known as a touring band. After the tour, they got back in touch and asked me about being in the band, because Eric had unfortunately passed on. Was that a hard pill to swallow at first? He gave me the back bedroom at his place. So I came home, took care of that, went back, finished the vocals and stuff, and before I know it, were on tour. So I'm setting up a situation now where I'm going to be wearing headphones and have a live mic in the room, and also have a click track. And I got a phone call from Don Ellis telling me that Herbie had called back and wanted to meet me and talk to me about joining the group. I just thought it was part of the aging process. Less means more to the average person. I looked around and realized that my whole life had become everything Id worked so hard to be, and when I came back to have a regular life, I had to go find one. They thought that because we had got to the point where we were selling out everywhere and making quite a bit of money, that we had reached stardom. I would say 95. They like to criticize you note for note as though they have higher ideas about what should be happening up there. I like to play on stage and have that good feeling that comes from the people. He is the major soloist in the band. So everything was really out of date. I used a small, jazz Ludwig kit for the Grand Wazoo and Waka/Jawaka aibums-a little 20" bass, an 8 x 12 tom-tom, and a pair of 14 x 14 floor toms. RM: Not too many rock drummers use 20" bass drums. Every time I saw him he was more spaced out and blank. There was a statement I made on a VH1 special, which Im sure youve heardthat I never really felt part of the band. And Im grateful for all of it, I wouldnt trade it for the worldbut it didnt squelch much, yknow? They couldn't see any further than where they were at. So I came home, and started seeing a series of doctors, getting opinions. The solo is arranged so it's really in-your-face guitar. So he said, "Well, If that's the case, I guess we don't need you in our organization." So I'm up there playing away and I decided it was time l finished, and all of a sudden. Aynsley Dunbar had played with everybody. When I get involved in something I like to keep it going, day by day. I been uplifted when he called, but when heard "country/western" I went back down. There was something that we had together that I think neither of us have been able to find anywhere else. Interview by Howie Klein, BAM, 16 February 1979 SAN FRANCISCO - Within the world of rock and roll there are certain performers whose distinctive virtuosity transcend their individual works recorded with a particular . I got ProTools, and Im working on stuff. RM: What exactly is traditional jazz in England? The pair, along with Rod Stewart, were the backbone of the Jeff Beck Group from its formation in 1967 until just over two years later. We can all play crush rolls around the drum kit, and play every note possible in a drum fill, but it will just sound like mush to the average person. The music is dear to me. I mean, its in my blood, yknow? And the only one that was consistent was, When the pain gets great enough, youll replace the hip. And I said, Excuse me? On the third Journey album, I started using double bass drums. Im just happy to be on the right track now, for once in a row. And Id sleep, and Id wake up, go do the gig, and the same thing would happen all over again. At 76 years old, Aynsley Dunbar height not available right now. His wife told me he was in a golf tournament, I think in Florida. And I was not gonna be part of that. Slick returned to the band in 1981, after performing guest backing vocals on Modern Times. And I only bring that up to tell you that, at some level, every one of those tracks are like a painting in a gallery to me, and theyre precious to me. I stll perspire a lot, but it's just from my body working. David Frieberg, our bass and key- board player, had been going to Nautilus for about a year, so I decided to go along and try it and see what it was like. And no contracts were really binding me to have to be or do anything anymore. But along with this, you have to print that I cant blame them. Because theyd had a certain amount of success without me, and they were wondering, once I joined, Is this the right direction? I could tell that. I just dont hang out in that environment anymore. I was the new kid. Jon Hiseman. But he was nice enough to call me, so I thought I'd go on down and listen to him. I've been collecting material for it. RM: Have you experimented with any electronic percussion? You can play quietly in a small area and it doesn't matter, but in big areas, people have to see movement on stage. Those songs, and those tracks. I live just above San Diego, in Del Mar. Theres like 20 different prosthetics, all claiming to be the one that lasts, and I had to do research on that crap. That, to me, is completely amazing. And so now Ive been sober for the last nine months, and I never want to look back. I had complete confidence in the whole process. **You were one of the few people in America to know how The Sopranos ended, before it aired. That was one of the most cathartic and painful and wonderful experiences Ive ever had, to go through the entire catalog, all the B-sides of albums that Id forgotten about, and remember everything about the sessions, and remember the writing of em, the struggles, the accomplishments. Well, disagreements are part of life! I went along with it. I think Im gonna go by with some brass cleaner one of these days, make sure it looks nice. I mean, this last year, I had a whole year off, and I kinda went buggy. So[long pause] when we did the VH1 thing, I said there was quite some time where I never really felt part of the band. And by the end of that tour, I was toast. Schon was like fifteen years old when he joined Santana. It was like being on a baseball team. RM: And he, in turn, will take you to different places; RM: This all ties in with what you were telling me the other night about how you base most of what you do on listening to the melody. The Melody Maker called it An exceptional debut in it s enthusiastic review at the time. AD: It was sort of progressive rock. We were supposed to talk serious contract papers with him right after 4th of July weekend that year. The rock drumming GIANT turned down both Jimmy Page's offer to form Led Zeppelin and Robert Fripp's to start King Crimson from out of the ashes of Giles, Giles & Fripp; quit the original Jeff Beck. On stage, Craig is the person I react to the most because solo-wise, he's the one who is always doing something new. RM: What type of music was being played in Liverpool?
