During his Coast Guard career, Stan was assigned to ships and duty stations in some of the world's most highly traveled cruising areas, including the Chesapeake Bay, Puerto Rico, and Miami, Florida. These agencies include the Revenue Cutter Service, which patrolled waterways in the early days of the Republic; the U.S. Life Saving Service, which protected shipwrecked mariners; and the U.S. Lighthouse Service, which kept watch along American shores. Its possible the Coast Guard would send out a long-range cutter from the West Coast or Hawaii, but its not necessarily the fastest option in an emergency in the middle of the ocean.
